桃太郎の姿が、日の丸の鉢巻に陣羽織、幟を立てた姿になり、犬や鳥、猿が「家来」になったのも明治時代からである。それまでは戦装束などしておらず、動物
達も道連れであって、上下関係などはない。明治の国家体制に伴い、周辺国を従えた勇ましい日本国の象徴にされたのである
